"I thought I'd go out over the first 500m and see where I was," he said. "I came out better than I thought and decided to keep going. If he was going to row through me so be it, but I always had a boat length on him. I was surprised - I still had a lot in reserve. But I did also have the peace of mind of being in front."

Like most of New Zealand's elite rowers competing at the Banklink- sponsored national event, Sullivan has one eye firmly on the national trials later this month as he eyes selection for the world champs at Lake Karapiro later this year.

"I'd love to be in a sculling crew boat, either a double or a quad, but I'm not worried, as long as I'm rowing."

Hacker, a former single sculls world champ and Olympic medallist who will contest the world champs as part of a German quad, admitted he was rusty.

"I've done 6km in a single scull and some 2km testing on an erg (since Poland), but not on the water - too much snow and ice," Hacker said.

"It was a really good chance to test the water. The conditions were very interesting."

The visiting German squad aren't as race-ready as their New Zealand counterparts.

"In two weeks they have their national trials, ours are in April.

"I started this race straight off training and now I'm back to the erg," Hacker said as his coach led him back to the gym.

Four-times world champion Mahe Drysdale cruised into the final with an easy win in his heat in a busy day for the sculler.

Meanwhile, Hacker's national squad team-mates Eric Knittel and Stephan Krueger were comfortable winners in the second heat of the premier men's double sculls.

Last year's world championship gold medallists were delighted to get out on the water.

"At home there's 40cm of ice on the river and half a metre of snow on the ground," Krueger said.

"The conditions here are good, not too hot, not too sunny but no ice. Today there was a bit too much wave water, which disturbs your rhythm, but so far, so good.

"We've only been rowing together for a month since Poznan. I had a bike accident where I broke my collarbone and tore a muscle in my leg, so I wasn't able to row for two months after that."

They are poised to meet some quality opposition in Friday's final.

In the first heat, Drysdale and Peter Taylor (Auckland RPC) headed off Matthew Trott and Nathan Cohen by half a canvas to seal a direct berth in the final, with the Southern RPC runners- up forced into a repechage.

A NEW festival brings 12 prog-rock bands to Stroud next month. The Winter's End Festival takes place at The Space on March 13 and 14. The event is being organised by The Classic Rock Society and Stephen Lambe.

Stephen is of the men behind The Summer's End Festival, the UK's leading prog-rock event which attracts sell-out crowds to the Forest of Dean every October.

"There's been a huge surge of interest in progressive rock music in Guess Watches the past two years with many young bands giving a new twist to the genre made famous by the likes of Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush and Yes," he said. "We've been able to put together a top quality line- up for Stroud that really showcases the fantastic range of music that fits under the progressive banner."
